Research in magnetism at StFX focuses primarily on neutron scattering experiments on frustrated magnetic materials. The magnetic materials lab at StFX features a cyrogen-free 9 Tesla superconducting magnet, a closed-cycle helium refrigerator, and a liquid helium cryostat capable of reaching temperatures as low as 1.6 K. In-house measurements involve electrical resistance over a range of temperatures and magnetic fields to identify phase transitions. Collaborative efforts with Michael Steinitz's research group has led to the development of a new capacitance dilatometer that is compatible with the magnet and the new low-temperature equipment.
